40 years ago my uncle made the most beautiful flowers out of wood fiber. The material felt like a thin spongey, velvety texture. I've been trying to find out where to buy this flower making fiber. It comes in 4" x 4" squares in different colors. He told me it was made out of wood fiber. All though it didn't look at all like wood of any kind. The flowers look real and even felt real. Can anyone remember way back than?

Hi,:)
I worked with wood fiber flowers, of course it wasn't 40 years ago, only 20, :D. They were so beautiful, I used to make wedding flowers, bouquets of roses and carnations. This brings back great memories. I haven't seen it anymore. I also remember that when you work with it, there was an oil on the paper that would stain your hands. The secret to making flowers with wood fiber was a light pressure when you rolled the petals together, they would blossom out in your hands. Also, you could put a drop of frangrance in center to give a real smell.
Thanks for the nice rememberance. [:I] If I come across some, I'll post it for you.

Hi Michael,
Thank you for your interesting input about wood fiber flowers. I thought I was the only one left on the planet that knew about this material to make flowers. I would love to know where to buy this lovely flower making material. Yes, I know how fabulous they are and I've seen nothing that can match an artificial flower like wood fiber. People look at me when I try to buy it in stores. What! wood fiber flowers! I would definately recommend these flowers for any wedding, that's how beautiful they look. Spectacular! Well, if anyone out there knows where to buy the material, please post it for me? Again, thank you Michael. I have a mail order business and I do weddings, bridal showers and baby showers. Handmade soap gift-wrapped in my own handmade paper and decorate the top of the handmaee paper with silk flowers. Very pretty, but can't hold a candel to "wood fiber." AdaBridalBaby

:) Hi,
Just thought of a way for you to make fabulous, in excellent taste,
that look real, flowers... Go to www.theribbonry.com and enter then click on books. I have 2 of these books and the ribbon flowers are incredible!! I think you'll make an inpression on your customers!!
You might even think of making a lace bag that is lined, and inbetween the lining and the lace is filled with scented pourporie (spelling incorrect). You slip your homemade soap inside the bag, the lining protects your soap, the lace allows the scent to come out. Your customers can take the soap out and hang the bag in a linen closet or wherever they want a scent. I think they would always remember you when they go in to their closets.
Of course, if your soap is scented then your pourporie should have the same scent.
Check out this lady's techniques, she's incredible.
I am very picky with what I display to the public, it must be in good taste, look like it comes from Macys!!!
Hope this is an inspiration!

Hi Diane,
Checked out your web site, awesome. My roommate and I are really into herbs also. Your soaps are very interesting.
I've been saving calendula flowers in the freezer so I can make a creme with them. If you would, I would like a suggestion of what base oil should I use for the creme, and how to go about it?
Also, you are very lucky like a lot of others with a web site. I do ceramics and sew. I had an outlet once for these, but it didn't last for long.... Is it very difficult to get a web site and mantain it? I really would like to get one, any suggestions of where to look for a source of information to get one? How expensive is it?
If these questions are a bit too much to answer, I'll understand. I live in a small town and no one I know has a web site.:)
I would appreciate any information you can tell me.
Thanks, Michael

Hi bmgmbl,
Thanks for your kindness! What kind of crafts are you into? I've been to offray, love the projects!:D Right now, I am wanting to start smocking some christmas ornaments. I bought a pleater and just pleated a piece of red silky velvet. But now it's to decide what patterns I want to embroider on it.
You ever get where you start a new project and you find all the materials are staring you in the face and you don't know where to start??? :) My bad habit is to put off till another day, and then go back and there it is,... still staring you in the face! Ha! Ha!

Hi Michael,
I would be happy to post a recipe for calendula herb cream. I will look it up and post it very shortly. Michael, it cost nothing at all to have a web site. It is so darn easy. You don't have to know anything about html. I created my web site through "Tripod" and they even give you shopping carts and you can accept all credit cards with just a very small fee for each sale of 2.9 % + .30 cents. That is so reasonable. That is it! You don't have to put money up front. If I can do it so can you or anyone else. If you need help starting my e-mail address is dupre141@yahoo.com. The site to build your web site is www.tripod.com. It might be a bit confusing at first if you don't have computer experience, but after awhile you will be making sales and collecting a nice pay check. You sound like a very talented and artistic person who would do very well on the Internet. I just installed my shopping carts in the last few days and they are working just fine. Check it out at http://adabridalbaby.tripod.com
Oh, by the way I have found some absolutely great cream and lotion recipes at http://www.hotboards.com/plus/plus.mirage?who=sugarplum&all=yes[/b][/red] type in this url, the whole thing in the search box and you will come to a message board. Just ask for a recipe and everyone there will shower you with all kinds of recipes. Nice bunch of people will to share what they know. Diane

Hi Michael
Can't say really into any particular craft, kind of jump around & just do what takes my fancy. Don't have a lot of time to give to it. Right now collecting things together for my grandaughters Valentines 04 wedding- according to decisions made & fretting over what she's yet to decide on-have picked up lots of heart "stuff"-how it will all come together still a work in progress. Have done sewing, embroidery, tee-shirt painting/beading,florals, all kinds of DIY house projects...-you know what I DO enjoy most? - I think they have a name for it now in "craft"land...recycling. Really like to find "stuff" in the GW (Goodwills) & Sally's(Salvation Army) stores, consignments, yard sales, etc etc-you never know where! and turn it into something else, maybe not even related to how it started- I guess THAT is my craft. My daughter wanted "something" for the farm-ish gate to her place,me & the little guy(4!) rounded up some vines off the property, circled & wound them, stuck some evergreen pieces we found, some artificial flowers, wound a lovely ribbon & voila-"something" for the gate. Do love making something from nothing-guess it's some kind of challenge. Know what your saying about having all the materials in front of you & not getting started-it's that 1/2 full-1/2 empty glass thing...it all sits there & waits for you to come back, right? Starting when you aren't ready would probably not turn out as great as if you waited til ready/rested/feeling creative with a head full of ideas. [8D]

Hi Diane,
Thanks so much for all the information!!!! You are so kind! I will check it all out and see if I can really handle venturing out and creating a web site. [8)] I do have so many things I love to create,
that I feel would sell, especially my ceramic angels.
One thing you said confuses me though, with not having to put any money up front, is there charges that I will be surprised of afterwards?

Please post the calendula herb creme recipe, I will really appreciate this! Also thanks for the web site with the recipes, will check that out to.
Again, thanks so much!!!:)

Hi Bmgmbl,
I can't believe you're a thrift store junky like me, HA! I love to recycle!! Being a sewer, I also love to collect the dime patterns! Just went today and found a garden encyclopedia for only $3.00!!!! 15 volumes!!! I live in the south and supposedly everything is cheaper here..?
Your working on a valentine wedding, that sounds like fun. If you need any ideas I will be happy to help.
Oh, not to sound stupid, but what is the 04 stand for, after the valentine in your post?
I also work with beads, but I cheat a little, I'll buy a second hand beaded dress from......where???...Ha!..a thrift store, and cut it up and sew purses and other things with it. I have only sewn for family and freinds and if Diane is right (above post) about it being simple to have a web site, maybe I'll be sewing for retail.
I just finished 2 ceramic angels that are about 18 inches tall and look as if they are flying that I want to put on the 2 pillars in front of my home, one on each side. They are very pretty, the man has a purple drape and mother of pearl sheild and the woman has a dusty rose drape and has her hands out in front of her. Both drapes are, (now remember these are ceramic), the drapes are lined with 22 carat overlay. The wings are tipped with the gold and the body of the wings are mother of pearl.
They really should make a statement, especially when the sun reflects off them. The big problem now is to figure out how to cement them on top of the brick pillars, the pillars have cement across the tops. I have been to the Quickkete site and studing what cement to use, so if I get hot weather, the cement won't expand and crack the angels! I wonder if this site lets you post photos, I would post them for ya'll to see.:)
Later,
Michael

Hi Michael..I admit it, I am a major thrift store junkie, think we have a lot of company though..it's an obsession. Never knowing what you'll find or what you'll turn it into keeps my interest. Haven't gone for the patterns as,if I sew usually have something specific in mind but sure would if had a use for them.Found a great striped bed ruffle in same shade as my grandson's nursery carpet/mint green-made curtains, rocking chair cushion covers,& dressers scarves out of that thing once it was washed & the seams opened. A lot of the books you find have some of the old time ways of doing things-a lot of which has been lost over the years, the old cookbooks are really from "scratch" which is great-'not use a can of' this & that-don't get me wrong, time-savers are great-use plenty of them but every once in awhile spending the extra time is nice. You got a GREAT deal on the books, are they for your growing zone? The 04 is 2004,should have put it all in-am sure the wedding prep will be fun-thanks for the help offer.Been trying to figure out bouquets, not sure which or how many yet, that are heart shaped (not the brides!)-have had a couple people say they seem to recall seeing some but some years ago, have a couple ideas how to put them together & think will just sit down & experiment-still plenty of time right now. Have done some beading but mainly on tee or sweat shirts after appliqueing(sp)& painting-came out nice, never took any photos, just made em & gave em.Never really stay with one thing-do it & move on.2nd hand beaded stuff from the thrifts is really a good savings-if you have the patience to cannabalize the garment you can save a fortune-I'm sure you know the best-the wedding gowns, especially the old ones-the beads were of a better quality, the lace and appliques are fabulous on some of them.Your angels sound so nice-hope they'll be safe outside,it would be a shame if anything happened to them.Had a co-worker who collected angels-going to her house was like a trip to heaven! They were everywhere.Have to ask,how do you tell a man from a lady angel? Good luck if you go for a web-site.Doubt anyone would steer you wrong here, everyone seems to be anxious to help one another.Gotta go:)

Adabridalbaby...re the ribbon site, happy had something to share. It was one of the better sites I've found for ribbon how-to all in one place. The larger craft supply store sites have a few things also but mix it up more, not just ribbon.

Hi bmgmbl,
The wedding sounds like it will be very lacy and romantic. Something came to mind, the majority of people think of valentines day with white lace and red satin taffeta or velvet. The main wedding table would be gorgeious if it is of lace and inserting triangle panels of the same lace lined with red med. bodied material, only in the corners, with the corner triangles made to look gathered and full, with a bow on the top of each triangle, on each corner. This way, you can accent the table with red. I am figuring the bridesmaids dresses are going to be red.
Another thought, the bouquets would be gorgeious of red roses, baby's breath, white carnations tipped red and placed on a lace fan with the flowers in the shape of a question mark on one side of the fan, placed up high above the fan, with ribbons flowing down on the side of the bouquet. They would hold the fans slanted sideways with the left side being the lace fan making the left side of the valentine heart, and the flowers making the right side of the heart. Does this make sense??

Oh, one more idea for the wedding, have arrangements of red lollipops covered with red tulle and tied with white ribbon with your daughter and husband to be's name printed along the ribbon in red, in the center of each table. Fill the arrangement with fine fern and baby's breath. Remember that the fern would have to be fine so the lollipops would be the center of attention. The guest can each take one as souviner.

Hope these ideas can help?

Hi Michael-Thanks so much for ideas. Am still in "thinking/gathering ideas" stage for wedding stuff. This is grandaughters wedding, she is 23/24then,her 4/5then yr old brother will be ring bearer, grooms' 5 yr old niece the flower girl. Have been thinking of LOTS of tulle-would like to go with a very cloud-like look, won't be large wedding party but 120-140 guests. Are few ways to go with head table-tulle down the center & just pushed this & that way, sprinkle with tiny red hearts or with tiny lights in it,or twisted/tied-or fine cord wrapped(to keep the height down)& just laid down the center or on front edge with each corner of the table with a decoration(flowers/whatever)-some such. Then carry the "clouds" to the centerpieces encircling water filled containers on "something"(bricks/books/block of wood/whatever)for a little height with floating candles-have been watching the $stores for crystal-look clear plastic bowls..one of those will-know-it-when-I-see-it things.Bride does not want to go nuts with the heart thing & I'd like to keep the red to a minimum, think it could get trashy if overdone. She has in mind to use valentine's heart candy/they have them with specific sayings for weddings-have been playing with using paper lace hearts & making little "envelopes" to put them in-just need to make a wedge-template for each side then glue the whole thing together to make heart-shaped pouch to hold the candies.Time is my enemy-don't have any.Tie the whole thing with wedding color ribbons, add rosebud,greens,bride-groom names printed ribbon/tag,whatever-will see how it comes along. For my daughters/7+ yrs ago wedding got some rolls of rope(hemp-like from Hm Depot),tied into doubled love knots, wrapped center with florist wire to hold tight, knotted the ends, decorated with her colors- burgundy/hunter green/antique white-rosebuds & dried stattis tied on burg/ant.white very slender ribbons with their names/date tag.-they were pretty-her MO-I-L asked if there were any left as she would love to have some for her Christmas tree! Out of time-gotta go for now.

Hi, bmgmbl,
Thanks, took a look at that site and funny you should say to follow the yellow brick road!!!! [8)] It looks too complicated for me. One look at the ball man on top of page did it for me. I am not a computer person, too confusing. I'm sure it's a nice site, but give me simple like this site, I can handle simple when it comes to computers.
Maybe this site will come up with photo capabilities soon.
Thanks again.

I, too, remember that wonderful wood fiber material for making flowers. I have made many kinds of flowers from it.
I actually came upon this Allcrafts website by searching for a source to buy some, if it still exists.

Love to find where to get the wood fibers also. I made these when I was little in the 1950's, sent a beauiful bouquet of flowers to my favorite actress then Gale Storm. Such memories.

Hi Bob,
I only wish I had a picture of these fabulous flowers. These flowers look so real that even to the touch one would think they were real. I know many wedding flowers were made from this media: wood-fibre. I was starting to think the suppliers were out of business when only last year my son-in-law bought a single rose for my daughter and it was made out of wood-fibre. I was so excited to realize this that I ripped open the package to try and find a name of a company, but there wasn't any. However, this made me realize that it's still out there-----somewhere. The name of the material that was used might be called a different name now. I will continue to search because these beautiful artificial flowers are worth it.
